“’Are you happy Conrad?’ I asked. He closed his eyes for a few moments. Maybe he was thinking about how he had asked me to marry him two days before.

“He opened his eyes and said: ‘I can honestly say I have never in my life been as happy as I am in this moment, right now!’

“When I woke up in the morning, he was dead.

“Most people, when I tell them that story, think it is the worst thing which could happen to a person. But it isn’t  . . .

“The first time I ever put on weight was when I was pregnant with my daughter, Lucy. I had moved to London with my husband and wasn’t working. I must have put on between four to five stone. But once Lucy was born, that didn’t matter, as she was absolutely perfect and life was good.

“That is until nine months later, when she had her first seizure. My son, Dean, was born two years later and he started with seizures when he was 10 months. It was Lucy though who was constantly in and out of hospital, often on life support and critical. My weight spiralled out of control.

“Lucy was eventually diagnosed with Dravet Syndrome and went to a special school. She occasionally went into respite and I treasured this time as I could spend quality time with Dean. He had his own problems … he was diagnosed with GEFS+ Syndrome (epilepsy) as well as ADD and Dyspraxia, but he still attended mainsteam school.

“My marriage, though, was suffering and we eventually divorced. A few years later, when I was 41, I met Conrad and can honestly say he swept me off my feet.

“Then I woke up one night to hear the noise of Dean having a seizure. I called an ambulance and he was taken to intensive care. Three days later they turned off his ventilator. Dean was taken from me on 30th October, 2009.

“To lose your child really is the worst thing that can happen to anyone. Dean was the best son, my buddy and my little rock. I miss him every minute of every day. I treasure the 12 years I had with him.

“I cannot remember the next year of my life. I was so sad. My weight escalated. I was eating and drinking way too much but didn’t care. Lucy was sad too and she needed me.

“Since losing both Dean and Conrad, my life has been a rollercoaster of emotions and my weight has gone up and down, but over time I realised I need to keep myself fit and healthy for Lucy, who is now 23.

“Last year, I decided to come off the anti-depressants and focus on getting myself healthy. I decided to start running again and signed up for a 10k.

“In May this year, I watched a TV programme about very low calorie diets. I looked into it and discovered it was Cambridge Weight Plan. The first week was hard, but I lost six pounds and the rest has been fairly straightforward. Two stone down, I feel amazing. I am healthier than I have been in a long time. I feel in control and the one-to-one support I have received from my Consultant, Cathy Halsall, has been priceless

“I am happy I have found Cambridge Weight Plan as it is helping me on my road to recovery and I am now in a position to stay fit and healthy. I am feeling positive that I am able to continue caring for Lucy who is my raison d’etre! She really does make my life worthwhile!”
