In late January 2006 Natasha Sahin's smoke alarm went off in the middle of the night because her kitchen was on fire. She grabbed her sleeping daughter and escaped the blaze, car keys and mobile in hand.
The next morning she was at a crossroads in her life. What was left of her possessions were in a couple of chard looking cardboard boxes, her marriage was deteriorating and her self-esteem was at an all time low.
But she had just started on the Cambridge Weight Plan and the initial weight loss she had experienced was the only glimmer of hope in her life. At 27 years old she felt trapped, out of control, and powerless to tackle her weight problem.
As she saw it, she had three choices: diet pills, surgery or the Cambridge Weight Plan. And she chose the last, mainly because her parents had used Cambridge in the US in the 1980s…and the other two seemed too extreme.
So she met up with her Consultants Tim and Lisa Cotteril and began her Cambridge Weight Plan journey. Then a couple of months later she had the fire and everything changed.
Natasha recognised the fire as an opportunity to make some significant changes in her life. It was time to start again. The initial weight loss she had already experienced had given her the confidence to confront the major issues in her life.
The day after the fire she signed up for the Flora London Half-Marathon scheduled for the coming March. She also had to accept that she was in a destructive and unhappy marriage and that this was the moment to end it.
She said to herself: “If I can lose the weight, what else can I do with my life”.
Soon after the fire she split up with her husband, becoming a single mother in the process. For the next two years she steadily lost weight through a very messy divorce and family bereavements.
But during this time she went from being totally controlled to being totally in control of her life. She began to learn to love herself again, something she hadn’t been able to do for many, many years.
She said: “If you can peel back all the layers that you build up around you over the years, you can be capable of loving yourself again and what a fantastic thing that is.”
She has lost weight steadily never putting any extra weight on during her time with Cambridge.
She said: “I went from a size 32 down to a size 12. I feel like a phoenix rising from the ashes of that fire.”
