I’ve always been larger than my friends. It started when I was a teenager; I was always a size 14, whilst my circle of friends were all size 8’s. The reason for this was simple… I loved food, and the more of it the better! I would eat and eat, and I didn’t know when to stop.
I was taught to eat all my dinner, so I didn’t recognise when I was full. When I was younger I did get away with it to some extent, as I played plenty of sport and was always riding my bike or walking, so thought I could eat what I wanted and wouldn’t gain weight.
As I got older, my size seemed to yoyo between a 14-16 until having children, but that was my excuse to eat for two! Even when they arrived I would eat their leftovers and binge on chocolate. I ballooned to a size 20, but I didn’t think of any health consequences as I was in my 20s.
My older sister Clare (who was also very overweight) and I decided to try to lose weight. We joined a local slimming club and we did manage to lose a few stone between us, but it never educated us to eat sensible portions or control our crisps and chocolate binges!
In the January of the New Year, my beloved sister died suddenly in the night of a massive heart attack. Clare was only 32yrs old and had heart disease which she didn’t know about. We were all devastated.
Suddenly, I had the wakeup call I finally needed. I never ever thought being a few stone overweight would damage my health. Losing Claire made me realise I had to do something about my diet – I had to have a drastic change to teach me new eating habits and to get me to a healthy weight, and fast.
Clare had three children; one was only two years old, and these poor children no longer had their Mum. I could not risk that on my own children. I had to undergo rigorous health checks after Clare died, including ECG’s and MRI’s to confirm whether I was at risk of the same fate, and if it was hereditary. Luckily the checks came back ok… for now.
Once all my tests were back, I knew it was time to start my new diet so I contacted my local CWP Consultant to arrange our consultation. From that first day, I never looked back.
Before, I couldn’t go more than two hours without eating; not because I was hungry, but because it was the habit I’ve always had. Having the three products and a small meal in the evening made me realise how much less I needed to eat without being hungry.
I am a completely different person now. I didn’t realize how unhappy I was before losing weight. I used to hide behind the camera, and covered up in large frumpy clothes more suitable for someone 10 years older than me. I am now able to chase my children around the garden, take them swimming without thinking everyone is staring at me, and go on fairground rides with them without the dread of the bar not fitting over me.
I know that my big sister Clare would be extremely pleased with the person I have become.
