Should you diet?

Being overweight or obese is one of the major health hazards facing us today. According to figures from the National Audit Office in the UK, being obese can take up to nine years off your life. It also makes you far more likely to develop a range of health related problems.

There are a number of ways to work out if your weight is putting your health at risk. Two of the most popular and reliable indicators are your Body Mass Index (BMI) and your waist measurement.

BMI Calculator

Enter your current weight and height and find your BMI measurement, and compare it to ‘What your BMI means’.

Ashwell Chart

Your waist measurement can be an important health indicator.

Interpretation of BMI varies between people; depending on their ethnic origin, if they are going through puberty or are particularly muscular.

What your BMI means

  • BMI below 20 = Underweight
You are underweight for your height and your health could be at risk. You do not need to be on a weight loss programme. Talk to your doctor or health professional about how you can reach a normal weight.
  • BMI 20 - 25 = Healthy weight
Well done, you are an ideal weight for your height.
  • BMI 25 - 30 = Overweight
Your weight is above the ideal range for your height and your health could be at risk.
